4 Days Mount Elgon Sasa Trail Up and Down | Climbing to Wagagai Peak Through Bamboo Forest, Heather Moorland
This 4 Days Mount Elgon Sasa Trail Up and Down itinerary opens with a stop at Sipi Falls before the climb itself begins, giving hikers a full look at the waterfalls that made this corner of Uganda famous before turning uphill into the mountain proper.
The Sasa Trail is the most direct route to the summit of Mount Elgon, and genuinely the most demanding, a proper mountain expedition through montane forest, bamboo groves, and high-altitude heather moorland before the final push to Wagagai Peak, the mountain’s highest point and the rim of one of the largest calderas in the world. Along the way, the trail passes through a section nicknamed the Wall of Death, a steep ladder climb up a rock face, and rewards hikers with genuinely rare sights: black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys, the endemic Rwenzori turaco, and high-altitude plant life found nowhere else, including the striking Lobelia elgonensis.
Day 1: Transfer to Mount Elgon National Park, Sipi Falls
After an early breakfast at your hotel in Kampala, depart around 7am for the drive to Mbale, taking in scenic countryside, plantations, and views over Lake Victoria along the way. After lunch in Mbale town, continue on to Sipi Falls, roughly two to three hours further. A local guide will lead you to the falls themselves, three separate cascades: the highest at 100 metres, a second at 85 metres, and a third at 75 metres. Depending on timing, you may visit all three or focus on one or two before nightfall. In the evening, transfer to Sipi Valley Hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 2: Hike to Mude Cave Camp (11km)
The climb begins from Budadiri, covered either by motorcycle or, with a suitably raised 4×4, by vehicle for the first seven kilometres to Bumasola village, taking in the community’s way of life along the route. From Bumasola, the motorcycles can go no further, and the real hike begins, three kilometres through community land and genuine agro-tourism and cultural tourism territory before reaching the park boundary.
From there, the trail climbs a section nicknamed the Wall of Death, a ladder-assisted ascent up the rock face to the top of the cliffs at 2,290 metres above sea level, before entering the montane forest zone for a further three kilometres to Sasa River Camp. Along this stretch, watch for black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys, birdlife including the Rwenzori turaco, endemic to this specific mountain, and plants of real cultural and medicinal value to the surrounding community. The full day’s distance, including the motorcycle leg, runs roughly 14 kilometres and takes about five hours.
From Sasa River Camp, the hike continues a further 5.5 kilometres to Mude Cave Camp, roughly three hours through bamboo forest and into the heather zone, where a striking variety of flowering plants grows, many of them genuinely valued by the local community for both culinary and medicinal use. Overnight at Mude Cave Camp.
Day 3: Mude Cave Camp to Wagagai Peak and Back (18km)
The second day’s hike begins from Mude Cave Camp at 3,500 metres, moving through the heather zone past Jackson’s Pool, a body of water sitting between the peaks, and into the caldera itself before reaching Wagagai Peak, Mount Elgon’s highest point. The round trip covers roughly 18 kilometres and takes seven to nine hours, passing genuinely spectacular features along the way: Jackson’s Pool itself, the vast mountain caldera, dramatic standing rock plugs, and unique endemic plant life including Lobelia elgonensis. Return to Mude Cave Camp for a second overnight stay.

Day 4: Sasa Trail Descent to Bumasola (6km), Transfer Back to Kampala
On the final day, descend via the Sasa Trail back to Bumasola, roughly six kilometres, and exit the park to meet your driver. Begin the journey back to Kampala with lunch en route, and you’ll be dropped at a location of your choosing, bringing the climb to a close.
