4 Days Nyungwe and Akagera Tour
The 4 Days Nyungwe and Akagera Tour takes travelers to two of Rwanda’s most rewarding national parks: Nyungwe National Park, celebrated for its chimpanzee tracking and one of the finest canopy walks in East Africa, and Akagera National Park, home to classic savanna game drives and a genuine chance to spot lion, leopard, giraffe, buffalo, and a wide range of other iconic wildlife.
Over four days, you’ll take on chimpanzee tracking and the canopy walk in Nyungwe’s ancient rainforest, followed by game drives and a boat cruise on Lake Ihema in Akagera. It’s a compact but genuinely varied introduction to Rwanda beyond its more famous gorilla trekking circuit, and one of the best ways to experience the country’s forest and savanna landscapes within a single trip.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
In the morning, your driver will collect you from your hotel in Kigali and set off southward toward Nyungwe Forest National Park. Along the way, you’ll stop in Huye (Butare) to visit the National Museum of Rwanda, the King’s Palace in Nyanza, and the Rwanda genocide memorial site. After lunch, continue on to your accommodation, where you’ll have the rest of the afternoon at leisure. Dinner and overnight stay at Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel (Mid-range) or Gisakura Guest House (Budget).
Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking and Canopy Walk
After breakfast, attend a briefing on Nyungwe’s endangered chimpanzees before heading into the forest in search of these lively, playful primates. Chimpanzees are often easier to spot than you’d expect, leaping between trees while chattering and calling to one another. Tracking typically takes around three hours, and once you locate the group, you’ll spend an hour observing them, with plenty of time for photos and video. Afterward, return to your lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, set off on a walking trail leading to the Canopy Walk, a suspended swing bridge roughly fifty metres long strung between towering forest trees. From here, you’ll take in sweeping views over the rainforest canopy, spotting wildlife moving about below. Before nightfall, return to your lodge, Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel (Mid-range) or Gisakura Guest House (Budget), for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Transfer to Akagera National Park and Game Drive
After breakfast at the lodge, set off on the drive to Akagera National Park. Along the way, enjoy a game drive with the chance to spot a range of wildlife before arriving at your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay at Akagera Game Lodge (Mid-range) or Karenge Bush Camp (Budget).
Day 4: Morning Game Drive, Boat Cruise, and Departure
After an early breakfast, head out for a guided morning game drive through Akagera National Park, keeping an eye out for giraffe, buffalo, elephant, sitatunga, black and white rhino, impala, and much more. After lunch, take a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Ihema.
You’ll then be driven back to Kigali and dropped off at the airport or your hotel, bringing your 4 Days Nyungwe and Akagera Tour to a close.
