3 Days Murchison Falls National Park

3 Days Murchison Falls National Park

3 Days Murchison Falls National Park; Murchison Falls takes its name from the single most dramatic moment on the entire Nile River: the point where the world’s longest river is squeezed through a gorge just eight metres wide before plunging 43 metres into the basin below, a spectacle of raw force that gives Uganda’s largest national park its identity.

Beyond the falls themselves, the park delivers a genuinely complete safari experience, morning game drives across open savanna, a launch cruise along the Nile beneath the falls, strong birdlife, and, for the more adventurous, an optional hike to the top of the falls for a view down into the very gorge the river carves through.

This three-day itinerary is built around that full range: a scenic transfer in, a full day combining game drive and boat cruise, and a final morning at the top of the falls before the drive back to Kampala.

Day 1: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park

Your driver-guide collects you from your location in Kampala for the roughly five-hour drive to Murchison Falls, with lunch along the way. You’ll enter the park through Kichumbanyobo Gate and head straight into an evening game drive before settling in to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay. Accommodation for this trip runs from Heritage Safari Lodge (budget) through Pakuba Safari Lodge (mid-range) to Paraa Safari Lodge (luxury), all on half board.

Day 2: Game Drive and Launch Cruise

Giraffes

After an early breakfast at the lodge, set out on a morning game drive lasting roughly three to five hours depending on what the park offers up that day. Murchison’s open savanna holds a genuinely strong resident population: elephant, Rothschild’s giraffe, buffalo, lion, hartebeest, Uganda kob, oribi, and waterbuck are all realistic sightings along the way.

Return to the lodge for lunch before heading out again at 2pm for a launch cruise along the Nile, culminating in a close-up, panoramic view of Murchison Falls from the water below, among the most striking vantage points anywhere in Uganda. Along the way, expect crocodile, hippo, and strong birdlife lining the riverbanks, kingfisher, cormorant, and bee-eater among them. After time spent at the base of the falls taking in the view and photographs, sail back to meet your driver for the return to the lodge, with a further game drive along the way, before dinner and a second overnight stay.

Day 3: Top of the Falls and Return to Kampala

After breakfast, drive to the top of Murchison Falls before exiting the park, a chance to look directly down into the narrow gorge the Nile forces itself through. Lunch is served along the route, timing depending on the day’s progress, before the roughly four-to-five-hour drive back to Kampala, where you’ll be dropped at a location of your choosing.
