4 Days Mgahinga National Park; Mgahinga sits in Uganda’s far southwest, wedged against both the Rwandan and Congolese borders within the Virunga Mountains, the same volcanic range that continues into Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and DR Congo’s Virunga National Park.
It’s the only park in Uganda where mountain gorillas and golden monkeys share the same forest, earning it the nickname “where gold meets silver.” A single habituated gorilla family, Nyakagezi, calls the park home, and the trekking experience here is genuinely comparable to Bwindi, Volcanoes, or Virunga, just considerably quieter given how few travelers make the journey this far south.
Add in a volcano hike with sweeping views over the surrounding forest and, on a clear day, a distant sighting of DR Congo’s Nyiragongo volcano, and Mgahinga offers one of Uganda’s most complete, least crowded primate experiences.
Given the genuinely long drive from Kampala or Entebbe, roughly eight to nine hours, travelers with tighter schedules can fly to Kisoro airstrip instead, a two-hour flight followed by a forty-minute drive to the park. Alternatively, since Kigali sits considerably closer, roughly four to five hours through the rolling hills of Rwanda and Uganda, this trip can just as easily begin in Rwanda’s capital.
Day 1: Transfer to Kisoro
Your guide meets you at your location in Kampala or Entebbe and briefs you on the days ahead before setting off for Mgahinga National Park in Kisoro district, close to the Rwandan and Congolese borders. Given the distance, you’ll break up the drive with stops at the Equator and in Mbarara town, the largest urban centre in western Uganda, for lunch and refreshments. Arriving in Kisoro town by evening, check in to your accommodation, refresh, and settle in for dinner and an overnight stay. Accommodation runs from Travellers’ Rest Hotel for budget travelers through Lake Mulehe Safari Lodge for mid-range to Gahinga Lodge for luxury, all on full board.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Experience
After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters with your packed lunch for a ranger briefing before entering the forest in your trekking gear, proper hiking boots, long sleeves and trousers, a walking stick, and a rain jacket among the essentials. Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga follows the same pattern as elsewhere in the region: the search can take anywhere from two to eight hours depending on where the Nyakagezi family happens to be that day, since the gorillas roam freely, but the rangers track them daily and know their general whereabouts.
Once you find them, you’ll spend a genuine hour observing and photographing the family before descending to meet your driver-guide and return to the lodge. Spend the rest of the afternoon taking in the views of the surrounding Virunga Mountains before dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking and Batwa Community Tour
After breakfast, return to the park with your packed lunch and trekking gear for a second forest experience, this time in search of the park’s golden monkeys. The process mirrors the previous day’s gorilla trek: a briefing at the park office followed by a hike along trails leading toward the monkeys’ likely location, with a real chance of encountering the gorillas again, alongside further birdlife and forest wildlife. The trek typically takes two to five hours, and once you find the troop, you’ll spend an hour in their company before heading back.
In the afternoon, visit a local Batwa community for a genuinely different kind of cultural encounter. The Batwa lived within this forest for generations before it was gazetted as a national park, and they remain among Uganda’s most distinct ethnic communities, the country’s pygmy population, with a traditional lifestyle built around hunting, gathering, and herbal medicine. Visiting offers a rare glimpse into a way of life that predates the park itself. Return to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4: Return to Entebbe
After an early breakfast, check out and begin the journey back to Kampala or Entebbe, with lunch and refreshment stops along the way. Depending on your onward flight arrangements, you’ll be dropped at a location of your choosing, including a direct airport transfer if you’re departing the same day.
