12 Days Mount Rwenzori Hiking | Margherita Peak and Bwindi
12 Days Mount Rwenzori Hiking; The Rwenzori Mountains are genuinely unlike anywhere else on the African continent, a range of glaciated peaks straddling the Uganda-DR Congo border, their upper reaches locked in mist, bog, and equatorial ice year-round. This twelve-day trip tackles the Central Circuit route to Margherita Peak, at 5,109 metres the highest point on the Rwenzori range and the third-highest summit in Africa, a genuine technical mountaineering challenge through five distinct vegetation zones, before descending to close the trip with mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
This is a serious undertaking best suited to physically fit, well-prepared hikers. The final summit push requires roping up, crampons, and proper cold-weather equipment, and is best attempted in a minimum group of four, two climbers and two guides, given the genuinely technical nature of the glacier crossing involved.
Day 1: Transfer to Kasese, Mount Rwenzori National Park (Approx. 9 Hours)
Your driver-guide will pick you from your location in Kampala for the long journey to Kasese, with a stop at the Equator for photographs and lunch in Mbarara town along the way. Arriving in Kasese in the late afternoon, settle in for dinner and an overnight stay at Margherita Hotel, budget or mid-range.
Day 2: Climb to Nyabitaba Hut (2,650m), Through Bakonjo Homesteads

After breakfast, drive to the Nyakalengija trailhead at 1,600 metres, where the hike itself begins, moving through banana plantations on the steep foothills and past traditional Bakonjo homesteads. The trail follows the Mubuku River through landslide terrain and up and down rock and bluff, crossing the Mahoma River before climbing steeply through bracken fern slopes and podocarpus forest to Nyabitaba Hut for the night.
Day 3: John Matte Hut (3,350m)
From Nyabitaba, the trail drops through forest to the Kurt Schafer Bridge, just below the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers. Passing through bamboo forest, the route then crosses a long, genuinely exhausting stretch of slippery, moss-covered rock. From the Nyamileju rock shelter, Mount Stanley and Mount Speke come into view before the trail enters the zone of giant heather, lobelia, and groundsel. After a tiring stretch of bog, you’ll reach John Matte Hut for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4: Bujuku Hut
From John Matte Hut, the trail drops to cross the Bujuku River. The upper Bigo Bog gives way to Bujuku Lake, with Mount Baker visible to the south and Mount Stanley to the west. Bujuku Hut sits in the shadow of Mount Baker and Mount Speke, tucked into a narrow valley below Steinmann Pass.
Day 5: Toward Mount Stanley
Leaving Bujuku, the trail climbs the steep slopes west of the lake, passing through the genuinely striking Groundsel Gully as it ascends to Scott-Elliot Pass at 4,372 metres. A metal ladder carries hikers over a steep section at the head of the gully, after which the trail splits: right toward Elena Hut and Mount Stanley over a steep boulder field, or left toward Scott-Elliot Pass and down to the Kitandara Lakes.
Day 6: Summit Margherita Peak
The push toward Margherita Peak (5,109m) continues to the base of the Stanley Glacier, a climb of four to seven hours to the summit. This stage is genuinely technical and physically demanding, requiring roping up, crampons, and proper equipment for cold, windy, and icy conditions, and is best attempted in a minimum group of four, two climbers and two guides. From the glacier, the route crosses the Stanley Plateau before the final ascent. Returning via Scott-Elliot Pass, descend to Kitandara Hut, passing the Kitandara Lakes, for an overnight stay.
Day 7: Toward Guy Yeoman Hut (3,260m)
From Kitandara, the trail ascends steeply up the headwall spreading out from the base of Mount Baker, continuing along the mountain’s south side to Freshfield Pass. From there, a long, muddy descent continues past the rock shelter at Bujongolo, the base camp used for the historic 1906 expedition led by the Duke of the Abruzzi.
Day 8: Descent to Nyabitaba (2,650m)
The path down can be slippery and muddy, with little to hold on to and genuine care required over vertical mud and steep rock sections. Overnight stop at Nyabitaba Hut.
Day 9: Nyabitaba to Nyakalengija, Transfer Toward Bwindi
Descend from Nyabitaba to Nyakalengija, roughly three hours, with a worthwhile 40-minute side trip from Nyabitaba to Lake Mahoma before continuing the descent to the park headquarters. From there, transfer toward Queen Elizabeth National Park, positioned closer to Bwindi for the days ahead. Dinner and an overnight stay at Parkview Safari Lodge for mid-range travelers or Pumba Safari Lodge for budget.
Day 10: Lion Experience and Game Drive, Transfer to Bwindi
Early in the morning after breakfast, join a lion-tracking experience followed by a game drive, with lunch along the way before beginning the four-to-five-hour journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Arriving in the park in the late afternoon, settle in to your lodge for relaxation, dinner, and an overnight stay at Buhoma Haven Lodge or Bakiga Lodge, both suited to budget and mid-range travelers.
Day 11: Gorilla Trekking Experience

After breakfast, transfer to the park offices for a briefing on mountain gorilla trekking from your local guide. The trek typically takes between two and eight hours depending on the gorillas’ movement, and meeting them unexpectedly in the forest ranks among the most captivating experiences travel has to offer, a genuine chance to observe and photograph them at close range as they feed and interact. After an hour in their presence, your guide and rangers lead you back to the starting point, where your driver will be waiting to return you to the lodge for a restful evening.
Day 12: Transfer Back to Kampala
Wake early and enjoy breakfast before meeting your guide for the long journey back to Kampala, roughly eight to nine hours including stops along the way. Arrive in Entebbe and continue to the airport for your return flight home, bringing this twelve-day mountaineering and gorilla trekking expedition to a close.
