he 3-day Kahuzi-Biega Safari is a short gorilla safari that takes visitors to Congo’s Kahuzi-Biega National Park for Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking. These special types of Eastern Gorillas are the largest among all gorilla species and can only be found in the eastern jungles of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The 3-day Lowland Gorilla Trekking Congo Safari starts and ends in Kigali City, Rwanda.
Detailed Lowland Gorilla Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Drive from the city of Kigali to Bukavu Town
Leave the City of Kigali in the morning after breakfast and drive to Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Transverse through the lush Nyungwe Forest National Park where you will come across several primate species-grey-cheeked mangabeys, Rwenzori colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, olive baboons and vervet monkeys in addition to several bird species among others.
The total drive time is approximately 7 hours and involves en-route Lunch and crossing the border via Rusizi in Bukavu Town. This is the nearest Town to Kahuzi-Biega National Park and is where your meals and overnight stay for the next 2 nights will be.
Day 2: Transfer from Bukavu to Kahuzi-Biega National Park for lowland gorilla trekking
Early breakfast and drive for 45-60 minutes from Bukavu Town to Kahuzi-Biega National Park Headquarters. While here, you will be briefed on lowland gorilla trekking guidelines as well as get a chance to first meet/interact with your guides before being divided into groups of 8 persons.
There are presently 4 habituated gorilla groups in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Set off for the breathtaking experience of the lowland gorillas through lowland valleys of Kahuzi and Biega Mountains where you are likely to see additional primates, birds, butterflies and many others. The entire trekking experience lasts 1-4 hours depending on the location of the lowland gorillas in the jungle and then return to Bukavu Town for Lunch and relaxation.
Day 3: Return back to Kigali City
Breakfast then check-out of the Lodge for a transfer back to Kigali City. Cross-over through Rusizi border and still drive through Nyungwe Forest National Park, Ethnographic Museum in Butare as well as Nyanza Royal Palace.
Lunch in the City and continue to Kigali International Airport for exit flight to your next destination/home. End of 3 Days Lowland Gorilla Trekking Congo Safari.
