Detailed Mikeno Mist Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer from Goma Town to Virunga National Park
Start your trip at Goma Town with a drive to Grande Barriere Border Crossing in the morning. Check-in with the Virunga Tourism Office on arrival and receive your Mountain gorilla trekking permit, Congo Tourist Visa as well as Nyiragongo Volcano hiking permit.
These documents have to be presented at the briefing point before the start of the trek/hike. On finalizing all required check-in processes, be transferred to Gikeri Ranger Post, then to Kibumba Tented Camp for meals and overnight stay.
Day 2: Trekking the endangered Mountain gorillas within Virunga National Park
Be served breakfast early to allow you transfer to the Ranger post for meeting with your Ranger guides as well as registration/briefing before starting the trek for the endangered mountain gorillas. Treks for mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park normally last 1-4 hours of hiking each day, depending on the pace of trekking, movement of the mountain gorillas and difficulty of terrain.
After spending quality time with the mountain gorillas (one hour), return back to Kibumba Tented Camp for late Lunch and spend the remainder of the day at leisure. Opt for guided nature walks at Rumangabo or bird watching.
Day 3: Nyiragongo Volcano Trek
Have breakfast and be driven to Kibati Ranger Post by 8:00am for the start of the Nyiragongo Volcano hike. On reaching the Ranger Post, hikers receive briefing on the Nyiragongo Volcano hike then get the chance to hire porters who will offer support (carrying bags) during the hike.
Ascending the Nyiragongo Volcano takes about 4-6 hours of encountering different vegetation types, bird species and enjoying unmatched views. Overnight Camping on the summit but don’t miss out the night views of the Nyiragongo Volcano.
Day 4: Return to the Town of Goma
This is the day of descending from the summit of Nyiragongo Volcano to its bottom. Begin the day with an early breakfast and leave the Crater by 6:00am. It takes averagely 4 hours to descend this magnificent Volcano and on reaching the Ranger Post, meet your Safari driver for a transfer back to Goma Town then drop-off at Grande Barriere Border Post.
